Present Continuous for Trends and Ongoing Changes

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

am/is/are + verb-ing

Explanation

Use the present continuous for a change that is happening now. It also works for a trend over time.

For example, "More people are working from home these days." Here, "More people" is the subject. "are working" shows the change is in progress, and "these days" tells us it is a recent trend. In Japanese, you may say "最近は在宅勤務をする人が増えています," but English needs "be" plus "-ing."

Examples

  • Prices are rising. 物価が上がっています。
  • More people are working from home these days. 最近は在宅勤務をする人が増えています。
  • The city is getting busier every year. その街は毎年どんどんにぎやかになっています。
  • Are sales improving this month? 今月、売り上げは伸びていますか。
  • The weather is not getting warmer yet. まだ暖かくなっていません。
  • Our school is using more tablets in class this term. 今学期、私たちの学校では授業でタブレットをもっと使っています。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often say "Prices are rise" or "Prices rising" for a trend. The correct form needs the be verb: "Prices are rising." Use the present simple for facts and habits, but use the present continuous for a change in progress.
