Yes-No Questions with "be"

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

be + subject + complement?

Explanation

Use a yes-no question with "be" when you want a simple "yes" or "no" answer. Put "be" before the subject.

For example, in "Is this your phone?", "Is" is the be verb, "this" is the subject, and "your phone" tells us what it is.

The same pattern also works with "was" and "were": "Was she at school yesterday?" Japanese can say "これはあなたのスマホですか" with the same basic order, so English word order is the part to remember. Do not use "do" with "be"; say "Are you ready?" not "Do you are ready?".

Examples

  • Are you ready? もう準備できた?
  • Is this your phone? これはあなたのスマホですか。
  • Am I late? 私、遅れていますか。
  • Are they at home now? 彼らは今、家にいますか。
  • Was she at school yesterday? 彼女は昨日、学校にいましたか。
  • Isn't the water too cold? その水、冷たすぎませんか。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often keep statement word order or add "do": wrong "You are busy?" / "Do you are busy?" -> right "Are you busy?" In a "be" question, move "be" before the subject.
