Superlative Adjectives with "-est"

A2 Eiken Pre-2 Elementary

the + adjective + -est

Explanation

Use a superlative adjective when you compare three or more things. For many short adjectives, add "-est" and put "the" before it.

For example, "Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan." Here "Mount Fuji" is the subject, "is" links it to a description, and "the highest" shows it is number one in the group. "Mountain in Japan" tells us the group we are comparing. Japanese often uses "いちばん", but English usually needs "the" plus the adjective.

Examples

  • Ken is the tallest boy in my class. クラスでケンがいちばん背が高いです。
  • This is the easiest test. これはいちばん簡単なテストです。
  • Mount Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan. 富士山は日本でいちばん高い山です。
  • Which bus is the fastest? どのバスがいちばん速いですか。
  • This road is not the shortest way to the station. この道は駅への最短ルートではありません。
  • She is the youngest player on the team. 彼女はチームでいちばん若い選手です。

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often forget "the" before a superlative.

Wrong: "Mt. Fuji is highest mountain in Japan."

Right: "Mt. Fuji is the highest mountain in Japan."

In English, the superlative usually needs "the" because it names one item at the top.
