Articles with Places and Geographic Names

A1 Eiken 3 Beginner

the + some place names; Ø + most city and country names

Explanation

Use articles carefully with place names. Most city and country names do not take "the": "Tokyo" and "Japan". But some names do take "the": "the UK", "the United States", "the Philippines", "the Alps", and "the Thames".

In "We went to the UK last summer," "We" is the subject, "went" is the past verb, "to" shows movement, and "the UK" is the country name that needs "the". Japanese does not use articles in this way, so learners often add "the" too often or forget it where English needs it.

Examples

  • I live in Tokyo. 私は東京に住んでいます。
  • She is from Japan. 彼女は日本の出身です。
  • We went to the UK last summer. 私たちは去年の夏、イギリスに行きました。
  • Have you ever been to the Philippines? フィリピンに行ったことはありますか。
  • They hiked in the Alps. 彼らはアルプスでハイキングをしました。
  • I didn't see the Thames when I was in London. ロンドンにいたとき、テムズ川は見ませんでした。
  • Visiting Africa was amazing! アフリカ旅行は最高だった!

Common Mistakes

Japanese learners often add "the" before every place name, because Japanese has no articles: "I went to the Austria last year." → "I went to Austria last year." They may also forget "the" in names that need it, such as "the UK" or "the Alps".
