Explanation
Use the present continuous for a change that is happening now. It also works for a trend over time.
For example, "More people are working from home these days." Here, "More people" is the subject. "are working" shows the change is in progress, and "these days" tells us it is a recent trend. In Japanese, you may say "最近は在宅勤務をする人が増えています," but English needs "be" plus "-ing."
現在進行形は、今まさに起きている変化や、ある期間で進んでいる傾向を表します。
例えば、"More people are working from home these days." では、"More people" が主語です。"are working" が「増えている途中の変化」を表し、"these days" が最近の傾向だと知らせます。日本語では「最近は在宅勤務をする人が増えています」と言えますが、英語では "be" と "-ing" を必ず使います。
Examples
- Prices are rising. 物価が上がっています。
- More people are working from home these days. 最近は在宅勤務をする人が増えています。
- The city is getting busier every year. その街は毎年どんどんにぎやかになっています。
- Are sales improving this month? 今月、売り上げは伸びていますか。
- The weather is not getting warmer yet. まだ暖かくなっていません。
- Our school is using more tablets in class this term. 今学期、私たちの学校では授業でタブレットをもっと使っています。
Common Mistakes
Japanese learners often say "Prices are rise" or "Prices rising" for a trend. The correct form needs the be verb: "Prices are rising." Use the present simple for facts and habits, but use the present continuous for a change in progress.
日本語では「物価は上がる」「上がっています」と動詞だけで言えるので、英語でも "Prices are rise" や "Prices rising" としてしまいがちです。正しくは be 動詞を入れて "Prices are rising." と言います。事実や習慣は現在形、変化の途中は現在進行形です。
