A threatened penalty for disobeying a law or rule.  Typically sanctions are imposed by a government on another country's government, and are often economic in nature.

法律(ほうりつ)または規則(きそく)に違反(いはん)した場合(ばあい)の威嚇(いかく)された罰則(ばっそく)。通常(つうじょう)、制裁(せいさい)は政府(せいふ)によって他国(たこく)の政府(せいふ)に課(か)され、多(おお)くの場合(ばあい)、本質(ほんしつ)的(てき)に経済(けいざい)的(てき)なものです。
