In the Edo period of Japan, a retainer was a vassal who provided military service to a lord in exchange for rice and a stipend. Retainers were also known as samurai. 

日本(にっぽん)の江戸(えど)時代(じだい)、家臣(かしん)とは、米(べい)と禄(ろく)と引(ひ)き換(か)えに領主(りょうしゅ)に軍事(ぐんじ)奉仕(ほうし)する家臣(かしん)のことでした。家臣(かしん)は侍(さむらい)とも呼(よ)ばれていました。
