am/is/are + past participle

説明

Use the present simple passive when the action/result is more important than who does it, or when the doer is unknown or not important.

For example, "This room is cleaned every day." Here, "This room" is the subject. "is" is the present form of "be". "cleaned" is the past participle. The sentence means that someone cleans the room every day, but we do not say who. Japanese often drops the doer too, but English still needs "be" in the sentence.

The passive can also be used when the doer is unknown or obvious from context, not only when the speaker simply chooses not to say it.

例文

  • This room is cleaned every day. この部屋は毎日掃除されます。
  • Rice is grown in this area. この地域では米が栽培されています。
  • English is spoken in many countries. 英語は多くの国で話されています。
  • Are these tickets checked at the door? これらのチケットは入口で確認されますか。
  • My bike is not used in winter. 私の自転車は冬は使われません。
  • The windows are opened at 8 a.m. every weekday. 窓は平日の朝8時に開けられます。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often forget the verb "be" and write "This room cleaned every day." The correct form is "This room is cleaned every day." In English, the passive needs am/is/are + past participle.
