linking verb + adjective

説明

Use an adjective after a linking verb. The verb does not show an action. It links the subject to a description.

For example, "My brother looks tired." means my brother seems tired. "My brother" is the subject, "looks" is the linking verb, and "tired" is the adjective. In Japanese, you can say "弟は疲れて見える" or "疲れているようだ," but English keeps the adjective after the verb. Do not use an adverb here. Say "She seems happy," not "She seems happily."

例文

  • This soup is hot. このスープは熱いです。
  • My brother looks tired. 弟は疲れて見えます。
  • This bed feels soft. このベッドはやわらかく感じます。
  • Does the milk smell bad? その牛乳、変なにおいがしますか。
  • The movie does not sound interesting. その映画はおもしろそうに聞こえません。
  • After the long walk, everyone seemed very tired. 長い散歩のあと、みんなとても疲れているようでした。

よくある間違い

Japanese learners often put an adverb after a linking verb: "He looks happily." -> "He looks happy." After linking verbs, use an adjective because it describes the subject, not the action.
